Provide Affordable Medication for Sickle Cell Patients

The Issue

My name is Sunmisola Vanessa Kolawole, and I am 18 years old. Like countless others, I have faced immense challenges just trying to afford the drugs necessary to manage my sickle cell disease. In Nigeria, my parents have had to bear the heavy financial burden of spending between 50,000 to 100,000 Naira on essential medications. These costs make drugs seem like a luxury rather than an essential part of my health care.

The struggle does not end at my home country, as I experienced similar issues when I arrived in Canada. My insurance here doesn't cover certain medications critical to my health, leaving me in a precarious situation, having to pay as much as 200 dollars for medication I cannot do without. This experience is not unique to me. Many sickle cell warriors across the globe face this financial strain, having to choose between their health and their financial well-being.

The financial cost of treatment affects Nigerians with sickle cell disease significantly. Sickle cell warriors across the globe deserve the opportunity to access affordable healthcare without the added stress of financial ruin. The current state of drug accessibility is unjust and places a heavy burden on individuals and families already struggling with the challenges of managing this life-long condition.

I am calling on pharmaceutical companies, healthcare providers, and policymakers to work together in reducing the costs of these essential drugs. Regulatory bodies should establish a pricing framework that ensures medications are within reach for sickle cell patients, regardless of their location or financial situation.

Let us unite in advocating for affordable healthcare for sickle cell patients. Your signature can push for the changes needed to make these life-saving drugs accessible to those who need them most. Please sign this petition to help sickle cell warriors all over the world.
