The Issue

Children under the age of 14 are becoming members of social media platforms at a tender age and are not cognizant of the dangers associated with these platforms. Social media makes children expose themselves to inappropriate, cyber, and physical dangers such as bullying, predators, and ill comparisons that may affect children negatively.

This legislation would restrict the use of social media for children under the age of 14. This would improve their safety, privacy, and wellness. Studies and concerns about these sites illustrate that many sites are addicting and that these sites lack developmental needs for young kids. Although restrictions are placed on these sites so that only people over a certain age can use them, kids at the age of 12 can still use these sites.

This act intends to minimize online harm, promote healthier development of childhood, and encourage safer, age-appropriate forms of communication and digital learning by restricting children under 14 from accessing social media. The act also supports parents and guardians by creating clearer boundaries and stronger protections for minors across New Mexico.
