The Issue

The media, especially social platforms like TikTok and Instagram, have a powerful influence on young people’s opinions, and beliefs. Many teens are exposed to biased information, and unrealistic standards, that shape how they think without encouraging critical analysis. This matters because it can affect mental health, spread misinformation, and limit independent thinking. Increasing media literacy can help young people better understand and question the content they consume.

Many teens are exposed to biased information and unrealistic standards that affect how they think. Content creators often present opinions as facts or only show one side of an issue, which can lead to misunderstanding or confusion. At the same time, filters, and carefully chosen moments create unrealistic images. Without realizing it, young people may start to believe these standards are normal or expected, even though they are often far from reality.

Constant comparison to unrealistic images can affect mental health and increase feelings of insecurity or anxiety. In addition, when false or biased information spreads quickly online, it becomes harder for teens to tell what is true. If young people accept everything they see without questioning it, they may struggle to form their own opinions and think critically about important issues.

Increasing media literacy can help young people better understand and question the content they consume. By learning how to identify bias, and check sources, young people can become more aware of how media influences them. Media literacy encourages critical thinking, helping young people make informed decisions and develop their own perspectives instead of simply accepting what they see online.
