Protect Women in Medical Crisis: Restore Emergency Hospital Abortions

The Issue

Pregnant women in medical crisis are being turned away from emergency rooms. Some are hemorrhaging. Some are at risk of organ failure. And now, under new guidance from the Trump administration, it’s only getting worse.

This administration just revoked a critical Biden-era rule that required hospitals to provide emergency abortions when a woman’s health is in danger — even in states where abortion is banned. The new policy is vague and dangerous. It leaves doctors uncertain. It gives hospitals cover to delay or deny life-saving care.

We’ve already seen the consequences: women forced to carry doomed pregnancies, begging for help while hospitals wait until they’re near death. Emergency rooms should not be places of fear and confusion. They should be places where care comes first.

We demand that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services immediately reinstate clear federal guidance: that hospitals must provide emergency abortion care when a pregnant person’s life or health is at risk. No one should have to choose between dying and breaking the law.

This rollback puts lives in danger. It must be reversed — now.
