The Issue

In 2025 alone, at least eight whales have been killed by ship strikes in the San Francisco Bay—and likely many more that sank unseen.

Scientists say the actual number of ship strikes could be 20 times higher than what’s observed, since most dead whales sink

The U.S. Coast Guard and National Marine Fisheries Service were warned.

In fact, a federal court ruled in 2022 that their analysis of California’s shipping lanes “defies logic” by ignoring the proven risk to endangered whales and sea turtles.

And still—nothing has changed.

We’re calling on federal agencies to immediately reroute shipping lanes away from known whale migration hot spots like the Santa Barbara Channel and San Francisco Bay approaches

Enforce seasonal speed limits for large vessels in whale-critical waters!
Complete a new, science-based biological opinion that reflects real-world threats to marine life.

Whales—including gray, humpback, blue, and fin whales—are being killed by preventable collisions every year. And the longer the agencies delay, the more lives are lost.

Protecting whales doesn’t require new laws—it requires the government to follow the ones we already have.

Tell the Coast Guard and Fisheries Service: Enforce the court’s ruling. Slow down ships. And protect our whales now.
