The Issue

My daughter, an adult with Noonan syndrome and learning disabilities, has always been my pride and joy. However, the online world has brought unexpected challenges into our lives. Although she has been assessed as lacking the capacity to consent to sex, it was determined that she was capable of using social media safely. Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case. We have witnessed strangers on platforms such as TikTok and online chat rooms encouraging her to engage in inappropriate behaviour. While she can recite online safety rules, she struggles in real-life situations to recognize danger, manipulation, and exploitation.

This isn't just about my daughter. It’s a disturbing reality for many adults with learning disabilities, who face potential exploitation in the ever-evolving digital landscape. They are often unable to discern malicious intent or protect themselves from those who may wish to do them harm. It's a call for urgent action.

Studies indicate that adults with learning disabilities are significantly more likely to be exploited online compared to their peers. According to research conducted by the Learning Disabilities Foundation, 70% of individuals with learning disabilities have encountered online abuse, and 40% have experienced online sexual exploitation.

It's imperative that we, as a society, prioritise their protection. We need stricter guidelines and policies to safeguard vulnerable individuals from online exploitation. Internet platforms must take responsibility by enforcing stronger security measures and providing tailored online safety education.

We propose the development of specially designed online safety programs targeted at individuals with learning disabilities. These programs should provide practical tools to help them recognize and avoid potential threats. Additionally, online platforms should implement more robust measures such as AI-driven monitoring to detect and prevent harmful interactions.

Together, we can make a tangible difference. Let's call upon social media platforms, technology companies, and policymakers to join us in creating a safer online environment for our loved ones.

Please sign this petition to protect and empower adults with learning disabilities. Your support can help drive change, bring awareness, and ensure the safety of the most vulnerable in our community.
