Protect Victoria's Duck Hunting Season
The issue
Hunting, fishing, and camping in Victoria is under threat.
Duck hunting has provided countless families and communities with memorable experiences, fostering a love for the outdoors and a respect for the delicate balance of the ecosystem. However, recent calls to ban duck hunting threaten to erode this activity and overlook the significant conservation efforts undertaken by responsible hunters.
Game birds have been hunted in Australia for over 35,000 years. Similar to Indigenous custodians, hunters prefer to have an active involvement in the conservation of wetlands. Australia has lost more than 37% of its wetland areas, most of this loss coming from private land development. Since the 1950s, hunters have been volunteering their time to protect wetlands from disappearing altogether from commercial land development.
Responsible duck hunting plays a crucial role in wetland conservation. Hunters are often the foremost advocates for preserving and restoring these vital habitats, as they understand the intrinsic connection between waterfowl populations and the health of our wetlands.
Duck hunting, when conducted responsibly, embodies the principles of sustainable resource utilisation. We urge the Victorian government and the select committee to recognise the importance of responsible duck hunting and reject calls for its outright ban.
