We strongly oppose the approval to clear over 37 acres of untouched, now-protected Banksia Woodland on Banksia Road in Oldbury. This critical area is set to be destroyed for sand extraction by a company that shows little regard for the unique environmental value of Australian land.

The proposal fails to meet EPA buffer guidelines, with nearby homes located just 300–500 meters from the site—posing health and safety risks to residents. Crucially, the project’s environmental studies omit reference to adjacent wetlands, despite the bushland forming an essential ecological corridor between them.

This area is a known foraging ground for endangered Black Cockatoos. With less than 30% of Banksia Woodland remaining on the Perth Coastal Plain, any further loss will severely impact their survival.

Local residents have raised serious concerns regarding noise, silica dust, increased truck traffic, and the inadequacy of the project's mitigation measures. These concerns remain largely unaddressed.

This approval reflects a legacy of poor planning decisions by the former Liberal government. The current Labor government now has the opportunity—and responsibility—to reverse this mistake.

We call on the Legislative Council to immediately halt further approvals for this project and preserve what remains of this irreplaceable ecosystem. Our natural resources must be managed with integrity, care, and foresight—for the sake of both our communities and future generations.
