The issue

We call on the Federal Dep't of Climate Change, Energy, The Environment and Water to take action through the Environmental Protection and Conservation Act (1999) to declare Tamborine Mountain a Protected area of National Significance.

Over development and population growth is threatening the essential habitats of many of our rare and endangered species.  We are almost entirely surrounded by urban and rural development.

The Tamborine Mt escarpment contains 85 percent of all fauna species and 65 percent of all flora species in the Gold Coast area.

Tamborine Mountain is home to ten different types of forests including tropical rainforests, Wet forests and open eucalypt forest.

Incredibly, these forests contain more than 900 different species of plants representing 65 per cent of all the plant species found in the 'mega-diverse' Gold Coast area.

The Mountain is home to threatened wildlife species including the rare Albert Lyrebird, Regent bower bird, Satin bower bird, glossy black cockatoos, coucal pheasants, platypus, echidna, wallaby, ring-tailed possum, koala and more. It is home to one of the World's largest skinks, the Land Mullet.

The spectacular Richmond Birdwing butterfly is unique to the Mountain. Populations have been in decline due to the loss and fragmentation of their habitats.

Fleays Gaint Barred Frog is a seriously threatened species that lives in the Kidd St  Joalah Park area.  It is in danger of becoming extinct due to proposed land developments.

The Mountain is part of the Gondwana Rainforests which is a UNESCO World Heritage listed area in NSW and S.E. Qld representing remnants of an ancient super continent known for the unique biodiversity, ancient plant lineage, spectacular landforms, extinct volcanoes and waterfalls offering insights into Earth's evolution. A lasting legacy of volcanic eruptions 23 million years ago.

Tamborine Mt plateau is a mere 5 km wide, 8 km long and only 28 square kms in area currently sustaining a population of over 8 000 residents.

The plateau is surrounded by five national parks. Witches Falls National Park was the first national park declared in Queensland in 1908 and the third in the World.

Tamborine Mountain is home to Ancient Cycad groves of up to 1,000 years old and Piccabeen palm forests.

The heritage listed Tamborine Mt Road was the first sealed road out of Brisbane, built in 1923. It has been bringing tourists here for more than a Century, seeking to experience the ambience of an unspoilt natural paradise.

Developers are currently applying to develop large tracts of land for retirement villages.

The Mountain is governed by a small, regional Council, Scenic Rim, based in the rural town of Beaudesert. It is struggling to challenge DA appeals thought the State Planning and Environment Court.

The name Tamborine is related to the native finger-lime, significant to the indigenous, first nations people of this area.

Tamborine Mountain is considered the 'Jewel in the Crown' of the Scenic Rim. The lonely Planet declared the Scenic Rim as one of the top 10 regions in the world to visit.

With its stunning rainforests, waterfalls and lush scenery Tamborine Mt was awarded Queensland's top tourist town in 2022.

Birdlife International has designated the Mountain an Important area due to its critical habitat for the Albert's lyre bird.

We, the petitioners, ask the Qld and Federal Government to take whatever means available to protect what remains of this tiny, fragile plateau and to preserve the natural ambience and ecosystems for future generations.

An objective of the Nature Conservation Act 1992 is the dedication and declaration of areas representative of the Biological diversity, natural features and wilderness of the State as protected areas.
