I live close to the border of New South Wales and Queensland, and I've seen first-hand the incredible beauty and diversity of the Shaw's Bay Ballina Estuary. Unfortunately, this magnificent ecosystem that houses the protected Estuary Cod is under threat. A significant problem arises because, while these fish are protected in New South Wales (NSW), tourists from Queensland (QLD) who are used to different fishing laws may unknowingly put these creatures at risk by catching them.

The Estuary Cod is a crucial part of our local ecosystem and plays an essential role in maintaining the natural balance. If these fish are overfished, it could have dire consequences not just for the cod themselves, but for the other wildlife that depend on them. It's vital that we take action to protect this species and, in turn, preserve our local biodiversity.

In NSW, it is illegal to catch Estuary Cods, and there are strict penalties in place to deter this activity. However, many people are unaware of these regulations. We need to provide better education and awareness to ensure the Estuary Cod are not inadvertently caught.

I propose that we install visible and clear signage around the Shaw’s Bay area, informing both locals and tourists of the protected status of the Estuary Cod and the penalties for non-compliance. These signs should be strategically placed at popular entry points and along the water’s edge to maximize visibility.

Additionally, we should work towards distributing informational pamphlets at local businesses, tourist information centers, and fishing supply stores to further educate the community and visitors about the importance of protecting the Estuary Cod.

We need to work together to safeguard our environment and uphold the protective measures put in place by NSW to protect this precious species. By increasing awareness and understanding of these laws, we can ensure that visitors respectfully enjoy our beautiful waterways without compromising the wildlife that inhabits them.
