Protect River Vale’s Tree-Lined Streets — Consider Underground Utilities

The Issue

PSE&G and Verizon are installing or planning to install new utility poles on and around High Road, Track Lane, and Whitenack Road in River Vale. Some of these poles appear to be approximately 50 feet tall.

We understand the need for safe, reliable electric service and better internet access. We are not trying to stop fiber-optic service or necessary utility improvements. We are simply asking for a pause, transparency, and a fair review of alternatives before more large poles are installed on our tree-lined residential streets.

High Road, Track Lane, and Whitenack Road are mature neighborhood streets with established homes, large trees, and a quiet residential character. Nearby streets in River Vale already have underground utilities. Because underground service already exists close by, we believe it is reasonable to ask whether undergrounding is possible here too.

Before any additional poles are installed, we are asking PSE&G, Verizon, River Vale Township, and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to provide clear answers to residents.

Specifically, we are asking for a temporary pause on additional pole installation until residents receive more information:

  • A clear explanation of why 50-foot poles are needed in this specific location.
  • The proposed pole locations and project plan, including whether tree trimming or tree removal will be required.
  • Confirmation of the legal authority and permits allowing this work in the roadway or near private properties.
  • A review of alternatives, including shorter poles, use of existing infrastructure, different routing, or underground utilities.
  • A real undergrounding feasibility review, especially because nearby streets already have underground service.
  • An on-site meeting with affected residents, PSE&G, Verizon, and Township representatives before additional work continues.

This is not about opposing progress. It is about making sure the project is done thoughtfully and with the least long-term impact to the neighborhood.

Large utility poles can affect tree canopy, storm resilience, property appearance, and the overall character of the street for decades. Once the poles are installed, it becomes much harder to revisit the decision.

We are asking our local officials, PSE&G, Verizon, and state utility regulators to work with residents before this project moves forward any further.

If you live in River Vale, have family nearby, walk these streets, or care about preserving tree-lined neighborhoods, please sign and share.
