From:

The Sikh Community of South Australia, along with compassionate citizens who believe in fairness, community well-being, and proportionate planning decisions by the Adelaide Plains Council.

Background: For many of us, the Gurdwara Sahib at 81 Wasley Road, Korunye, has become an essential and cherished part of our daily lives. It serves as a beacon of spiritual guidance and a vital community hub for countless individuals and families in northern Adelaide, including Two Wells, Virginia, and Riverlea. The very thought of this sacred place ceasing its operation has caused significant distress and concern within our community.

This Gurdwara Sahib is much more than just a place of worship; it is:

However, despite its positive impact, the Adelaide Plains Council Assessment Panel has unjustly refused retrospective Planning Consent (Development Application No. 24010703). Their decision is based on a narrow, outdated view of the "Rural Horticulture Zone," falsely claiming the land is suitable for intensive agriculture and that the Gurdwara causes incompatible traffic, noise, and dust. This stance is a grave injustice and illogical:
A Sanctuary for Sikh Families. It offers a vital refuge where our children find belonging and protection from potential bullying, especially for those who wear turbans in mainstream schools. It is a space for them to connect with peers from similar backgrounds, fostering cultural identity, supporting mental health, and alleviating feelings of alienation and depression.

Unwavering Support from Neighbours and Community: Our immediate neighbours, who are most directly affected, stand united with us. Their sworn statements confirm "no noise, no dust," and "no negative impact" on their rural amenities. Many are even willing to support the Gurdwara's growth financially, a strong testament to its peaceful and harmonious integration.

A Foundation for Youth Development: Through participation in religious observances and community service (Seva), our young people learn discipline, humility, and essential life skills, helping to steer them away from negative influences like drugs and violence. The communal meal (Langar) teaches equality and humility and strengthens our collective spirit.

A Cornerstone of Our Lives: Many families, including the Manager and some members of the Sangat, visitors, and donors, have made significant life choices—such as purchasing homes closer to Korunye—specifically because of the Gurdwara and the peace it provides. It has anchored families and encouraged relocations to Two Wells, supporting the local economy.

The ongoing dispute and the Council's changing stance are causing deep psychological impacts, including anger, confusion, and a sense of injustice among those involved in and supporting the Gurdwara. This sacred site is a core part of our lives, and we cannot accept its closure.

From: The dedicated and deeply concerned Sikh Community of South Australia, initiated by Goldy Gill, a committed community member.
Request: We, the undersigned, respectfully but firmly urge the Adelaide Plains Council and the Environment, Resources and Development Court of South Australia to:

RECONSIDER AND OVERTURN the unjust refusal of Development Application No. 24010703 for the Gurdwara Sahib at 81 Wasley Road, Korunye.

GRANT PLANNING CONSENT for the ongoing operation of this vital Place of Worship, subject to reasonable conditions that reflect the true, minimal impacts and the social and economic contributions it makes.

ACKNOWLEDGE and support the factual evidence presented, including expert reports and sworn affidavits from neighbours, which clearly show the Gurdwara's harmonious integration and minimal impact on local amenity.

STOP all enforcement actions against the Gurdwara Sahib, recognising the applicant's good faith, innocence regarding previous alleged "breaches," and their full commitment to complying with regulations.
We call on the Council to adopt a forward-thinking and just approach to planning that meets the evolving needs of its diverse communities, instead of clinging to outdated interpretations that cause unnecessary hardship and overlook the reality on the ground.
We are formally appealing this decision to the ERD Court and would like your support for our beloved Gurdwara Sahib.

Thank You
