The Issue

According to Nurse.org's 2026 State of Nursing Survey, 27% of nurses were physically assaulted at work in the past 12 months — hit, kicked, pushed, bitten, or grabbed — and 52% experienced verbal threats or aggressive language. (https://nurse.org/articles/nurses-workplace-violence-2026/

This is not just a workplace issue — it’s a public health crisis. When healthcare workers do not feel safe, patient care suffers, staffing shortages worsen, and entire communities are negatively impacted.

It is time for federal action. Nurses and healthcare professionals deserve the same protections as other federally protected workers, such as airline crews.

Nurses show up for you. Stand up for them.

On May 5, 2025, U.S. Senators Angus King and Cindy Hyde-Smith, along with Representatives Madeleine Dean and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, introduced bipartisan legislation known as the Save Healthcare Workers Act. This bill would make it a federal crime to assault hospital staff while they are performing their duties.

As of early 2026, the Save Healthcare Workers Act of 2025 (H.R. 3178) in the 119th Congress has 46 cosponsors (28 Democrats and 18 Republicans) in addition to its original sponsors.

The legislation is designed to deter violence, strengthen accountability, and ensure that those who harm healthcare workers are prosecuted appropriately. However, it remains stalled in the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Jim Jordan.

Through this grassroots campaign, we are raising awareness among the public and urging action from our elected officials. Our goal is clear: move this legislation out of committee, bring it to the House floor, and ultimately establish stronger protections for those who care for us all.

We invite you to be part of the solution. Please sign the petition and share this message with your friends, family, and colleagues.
