Protect Our Data: Demand a Data Protection Law in the Maldives Now

The Issue

The Maldives is going digital. But where are our rights in this transformation?

In recent years, both government agencies and private companies have collected massive amounts of personal data from citizens, including national

ID numbers, biometric data, school and health records, mobile SIM registrations, and financial information. These systems have repeatedly been breached. Sensitive data has been leaked, sold or misused, yet no one has been held accountable. Citizens have no real control over their own information. There is no legal protection. No transparency. No justice.

This is not a fringe concern. It is a matter of safety, rights, and human dignity. In a time when the government is advancing its digital agenda under “Maldives 2.0,” we must ensure that progress does not come at the cost of our basic freedoms. Data protection is not optional. It is a fundamental right in any modern democracy.

The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), already adapted by more than 140 countries, including democracies like Brazil, Kenya, and India, it provides a clear and proven framework that can guide our own path.

What We Can Reasonably Expect

We are asking the Government and Parliament to take practical and urgent steps to introduce a Data Protection law that:

1. Clearly defines your rights over your personal data
2. Requires organizations to get your consent before collecting or using your data
3. Obligates institutions to secure your data and report breaches transparently
4. Establishes an independent authority to monitor and enforce data protection
5. Holds both public and private sectors accountable for mishandling data

We cannot afford further delay. The cost of inaction is paid in stolen data, lost trust, and violated rights.

Sign this petition and stand with us to demand a future where digital progress includes digital dignity.
