The Issue

As a concerned Nigerian, I am deeply troubled by President Donald J. Trump’s recent decision to place Nigeria under the Country of Particular Concern (CPC) designation. This move threatens our nation’s sovereignty and undermines our ability to handle our internal security challenges independently.
Nigeria is currently facing a dire situation with terrorist attacks plaguing various regions, and the tragic loss of lives affects both Christians and Muslims alike. We understand the gravity of these challenges but firmly believe that external threats, sanctions, or military interventions are not the answer.

Nigeria is a sovereign state, and we strongly urge the United States to collaborate with our government rather than imposing punitive measures. Collaborative efforts can bring about meaningful change without compromising our national dignity. By working together, both nations can develop strategic plans that address security concerns while respecting our autonomy and shared democratic values.

This is also an opportunity for the Nigerian government to take this moment seriously and stop playing politics with the nation’s security. The safety and unity of Nigerians must rise above party lines, personal interests, or political calculations. The government must demonstrate urgency in protecting all citizens and strengthening internal security systems that safeguard lives, property, and freedom of worship.

The situation calls for thoughtful engagement rather than coercive measures. Instead of sending troops or imposing sanctions, we urge increased diplomatic efforts, intelligence sharing, and strategic partnerships which can prove far more effective in combating terrorism and promoting peace.

We therefore call upon
1. President Donald J. Trump and the U.S. government to reconsider the CPC designation and withdraw all threats of sanctions or military presence in Nigeria.

2. The Government of Nigeria to treat this as a wake-up call to take decisive action in enhancing security, ensuring justice, and protecting citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity.

3. The international community to support cooperative, peace-driven solutions that strengthen Nigeria rather than weaken it.

Sign this petition to stand for Nigeria’s sovereignty, peace, and the right to resolve our internal issues without foreign coercion. Together, we can urge leaders on both sides to choose partnership over punishment and peace over provocation.
