Protect New Zealanders from Extreme Weather Events

Protect New Zealanders from Extreme Weather Events

The issue

The Anniversary weekend floods of January 27th closely followed by Cyclone Gabrielle have brought the devastating effects of climate change and under investment in infrastructure into sharp focus.

Many people across the country have been left with nowhere to live and an uncertain future around what happens next. These people need answers urgently.

For many properties in high risk zones, it simply doesn't make sense to rebuild and wait for the next disaster to strike. These people are left with next to no options. A family home they cannot live in, a property that cannot be sold and land that is too unsafe to use.

This is a nationwide issue. Homes at risk of flooding, clifftop properties, low lying coastal areas. All of these homes are vulnerable to future weather events.

We are calling on the government to...

  1. Create a bipartisan, nationwide managed retreat program. Addressing risk faced to homes from flooding, slips, rising sea levels and climate related events.
  2. Compensation for additional living costs incurred due to damage from natural disasters that are not covered by insurance.
  3. A comprehensive and immediate maintenance program that addresses infrastructure shortfalls and mitigates damage from future weather events.

Whether your home has been affected directly or someone close to you has, we are asking anyone and everyone who supports this cause to sign the petition and help us create a way out of this desperate situation. This is a problem that is going to get worse not better and we need to ensure that New Zealanders are not left in increasingly dangerous locations.
