Protect New Zealand’s Wildlife: Repeal the Law That Allows Native Animals to Be Killed for

The issue

New Zealand just passed a law that allows native wildlife—including kiwis—to be legally killed if they’re deemed to be “in the way” of certain development projects.

Yes, you read that right.

Our national icon. An endangered, defenseless bird.

Can now be killed—legally—if construction or human progress demands it.

This is a disturbing and dangerous step backwards.

It sends a horrifying message: that animal life, native ecosystems, and our environmental identity are disposable. That the homes of our most vulnerable creatures can be bulldozed in the name of convenience. That if wildlife gets in the way—we remove it.

There are no clear guidelines or accountability measures to prove whether an animal was actually “in the way” or not. That gives developers, corporations, and individuals unchecked power. And if history has shown us anything, it’s that this kind of vague, unchecked power will be abused.

This is about more than animals. It’s about humanity.

Because when you strip the rights of those who cannot fight back—when you normalize cruelty—you create a culture that devalues life altogether. We’ve already seen human rights under attack in this country: equal pay being reversed, trans rights being dismantled. And now, we’re turning that same violence toward the voiceless—toward the creatures who call this land home.

Enough is enough.

We demand that this law be repealed immediately and replaced with a framework that:

Prioritizes the protection of native species
Prohibits lethal action against endangered animals
Requires transparent, science-backed environmental assessments
Holds developers and decision-makers accountable

We are not going to sit quietly while lives—any lives—are deemed expendable.

This is not progress. This is not who we are.
