Healthcare is a basic right, not a privilege limited by income, race, or administrative deadlines.

The current Medi-Cal renewal process requires annual or semi-annual renewal. Enrollees must submit proof indicating their ongoing eligibility before the deadline. If participants do not renew on time, their Medi-Cal coverage may end and they must reapply. During the reapplication period there is a possibility of losing full benefits temporarily. This process is flawed due to many enrollees losing coverage due to administrative reasons, not ineligibility. 

To fix this, we need a policy that allows Medi-Cal enrollees to keep their coverage for a year, regardless of small fluctuations in income. In addition, eligible individuals should be automatically renewed at the annual renewal by using existing data such as tax records and SNAP. This would safeguard working individuals from losing coverage. This matters because having more insured people will likely reduce racial coverage gaps, reduce emergency room visits, and lead to better management of chronic disease. 

Every month families lose coverage due to minor income changes. This results in difficulty seeing their doctor, skipped medications, and undue anxiety.
