Protect Malibu’s Coastline and Community from Luxury Overdevelopment

The Issue

Malibu is still recovering from the Palisades Fire, which destroyed over 700 homes. One year later, rebuilding has barely begun—only 22 permits have been issued. Now, wealthy investors are buying up the burned-out lots, raising serious concerns about the future of this coastal town.

New Zealand billionaire brothers have purchased 16 beachfront lots in Malibu, planning to build prefabricated luxury homes through their company. While they claim to want to help rebuild, local residents worry this could push Malibu even further toward becoming a place for second homes and investment properties—not for people who actually live here.

These luxury developments may be legal, but that doesn’t mean they’re right for the community. Without stronger rules, Malibu’s coastline could be filled with oversized mansions that ignore the needs of permanent residents, worsen fire risk, and damage the fragile coastal environment.

We’re calling on the Malibu City Council to take action before it’s too late:

  • Set a cap on the square footage of new beachfront homes, like the one already in place for inland properties.
  • Prioritize rebuilding support, permits, and incentives for full-time residents, not outside investors.
  • Protect what’s left of Malibu’s local character by making sure future development reflects the people who actually live and work here.

Malibu deserves to come back stronger—not bigger, richer, and more exclusive. If we want a real community to return, we need policies that protect local families and the natural coastline, not just real estate portfolios.

Sign this petition to urge Malibu’s leaders to stop luxury overdevelopment and keep Malibu livable for the people who call it home.
