My journey with technology began in high school in 2008 where i built my first 3D printer out of legos and random parts i found in my house. It has profoundly influenced my career and passion for technological innovation. Like many others in the Maker community, I view additive manufacturing as an empowering tool for creativity, education, and economic opportunity. However, recent legislative proposals threaten to stifle this vital industry.

Bills such as NY S9005 / A10005, A2228, S227A and CA AB 2047 propose mandatory hardware-level digital rights management (DRM) and restrictive blocking software to control 3D printers and CAD/STEP file distribution. While these measures may aim to address concerns over unauthorized use, they overlook the severe technical and economic impacts on legitimate businesses, innovators  and students.

Implementing mandatory DRM introduces significant technical hurdles, inflates production costs, and restricts device functionality. In an industry built on open-source innovation, these restrictions will stunt STEM learning and slow technological advancement. Imposing such controls does not improve public safety; instead, it deters educational and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Educational institutions rely on unfettered access to 3D printing to prepare students for engineering and manufacturing careers. Similarly, entrepreneurs and small business owners rely on these tools to prototype and manufacture goods, driving marketplace competition.

We urge lawmakers to listen to the engineers, business owners, educators, and constituents opposing these restrictive measures. By rejecting these proposals, we can preserve the integrity and potential of 3D printing, ensuring it remains a source of inspiration and opportunity for future generations.
