The Issue

Golden Eagles are one of the most powerful and iconic raptors in North America. They soar over Nevada’s desert landscapes with strength and grace — but now, they are disappearing in silence.

New research from the University of Nevada shows a hidden decline in the state’s Golden Eagle population. Despite full-looking nesting areas, survival rates for both young and adult eagles are dangerously low. Many never make it through their first year. Even mature adults, which should anchor the population, are dying too soon.

The reasons are heartbreaking. Drought is drying up habitat. Disease has wiped out rabbits, their most important prey. And massive solar fields, powerlines, and expanding road systems are cutting through the desert, fragmenting the land these birds need to survive.

Worse still, most conservation efforts focus only on protecting nests. But Golden Eagles rely on wide, open ranges and healthy food supplies. Nest buffers alone are not enough.

This petition calls on state and federal wildlife agencies to act immediately:

  • Protect foraging habitat from unchecked energy and infrastructure development
  • Fund rabbit and prey species recovery programs
  • Expand Golden Eagle protections to include nonbreeding adults and migratory corridors
  • Modernize the Eagle Act to reflect current threats, not just nest disturbance

Golden Eagles are not just birds. They are symbols of freedom, strength, and the wild American West. If we wait until their numbers collapse, it will be too late.

Sign this petition to stand with the wildlife experts calling for urgent action. Help protect the Golden Eagles of Nevada — before the sky goes quiet.
