The Issue

Freedom of speech is a core American value. It allows us to question authority, share ideas, and hold public figures accountable, regardless of our political views. But that freedom only works if it’s protected from government interference.

A new bill in Congress — the Free Expression Protection Act — aims to strengthen those protections. The bill would make it harder for government officials to pressure private companies into silencing or punishing individuals based on what they say.

This kind of legislation matters. In recent years, there have been public concerns about whether political pressure has influenced media decisions,  including reports involving comedian Jimmy Kimmel and other public commentators. Regardless of who is involved or what was said, the principle remains the same: free speech should not be vulnerable to retaliation from those in power.

The First Amendment already bars the government from restricting speech, but this bill would provide clearer legal protections when public officials attempt to influence speech indirectly, especially through backchannel pressure or regulatory threats.

This isn't about politics or partisanship. It’s about making sure all Americans, whether they’re celebrities, journalists, or private citizens, can speak their minds without fear that their government will target them for it.

Sign this petition to show your support for stronger legal protections for free expression. Ask Congress to pass the Free Expression Protection Act and reaffirm America’s commitment to open dialogue and democratic principles.
