Protect Community Water Fluoridation In Tennessee

The Issue

We urge Tennessee lawmakers to oppose any legislation that seeks to remove fluoride from our community water systems. Instead, we support monthly testing and maintaining fluoride levels at the recommended 0.7 parts per million to ensure both safety and effectiveness.

Water fluoridation is a well-researched, safe, and effective method to prevent tooth decay and improve oral health for all Tennesseans, especially children, seniors, and low-income families. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA), the American Dental Association (ADA), American Dental Education Association (ADEA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) all recognize community water fluoridation as a critical public health measure that reduces cavities by at least 25% in both children and adults.

Why We Must Keep and Properly Regulate Fluoride in Tennessee's Water

1. Proven Safety & Effectiveness: Decades of research confirm that fluoridation at 0.7 ppm is optimal for cavity prevention without adverse health effects.

2. Supports Public Health & Equity: Fluoridated water benefits all Tennesseeans particularly those who cannot afford regular dental care.

3. Prevents Costly Dental Problems: For every $1 invested in fluoridation, communities save $38 in dental treatment costs. Removing fluoride or failing to maintain proper levels could increase Medicaid and out-of-pocket expenses.  It is the fiscally responsible thing to do for Tennessee.

4. Commitment to Transparency & Safety: Regular monthly water testing ensures that fluoride levels remain within the scientifically recommended range for maximum benefit and safety.

5.  Supported by Leading Experts: The CDC, ADHA, ADEA, ADA, American Academy of Pediatrics, and Tennessee Department of Health all endorse properly maintained community water fluoridation.

Take Action Now!  Bill SB1141/HB987 has been introduced by East Tennessee Senator Rusty Crowe with an date to remove fluoride set as July 31st, 2025.

We call on Tennessee legislators to reject bill SB1141/HB897 and any bill that moves to remove fluoride from public water systems and instead support policies requiring consistent, transparent monthly testing to maintain 0.7 ppm fluoride levels. This balanced approach ensures both public health benefits and accountability in water quality management.
