The Issue

Having walked the halls of this unique 100-year-old Secondary School Visual Art program, both as a student and now as a teacher, I can personally attest to its immeasurable impact. It was this very program that served as the launchpad for my own art career, fueling my passion and molding my future. Today, this vital art education initiative in London, Ontario is under threat due to the proposed elimination of the essential bussing service that draws in 70% of its students from across the district.

The decision to cut bussing stems from documented mismanagement by the school board, which not only underestimates the program's cultural significance but also its importance to the wider community. This program, the only one of its kind in our province, has thrived for a century by nurturing countless aspiring artists, strengthening our cultural fabric, and offering unparalleled artistic education. Without bussing, many students will lose access to this invaluable opportunity, leading to a significant decline in enrollment and jeopardizing the future of the entire program.

This is not merely a matter of transportation; it's about maintaining access to high-quality art education, fostering creativity, and sustaining our community's cultural vibrancy. Art programs like these are crucial for holistic education, playing a pivotal role in developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and fostering emotional and social growth among students.

We need to urge the school board to continue to offer the necessary bussing, which is fundamental to the program's success and availability to students throughout the TVDSB and LDCSB districts. The loss of bussing not only threatens the existence of the program but also undermines the educational opportunities available to future generations of artists who deserve the chance to thrive as I did.

By signing this petition, you stand with us in asking the school board to prioritize our city's cultural legacy and protect the future of art education in Ontario. Join us in demanding a responsible solution that preserves and continues to invest in this remarkable program for the benefit of all our community members and aspiring artists. Please sign and share to help us keep this century-old tradition alive.
