The Issue

Stapleford, Beeston, Eastwood, Kimberley and the rest of Broxtowe Borough are at risk of being absorbed into a new Nottingham City Council as part of the Government's Local Government Review.

The Government’s proposals to abolish borough and district councils across the country could mean Broxtowe being forced into joining a new council including the areas under Nottingham City Council—a financially unstable authority burdened by a projected £23.4 million budget deficit for the next financial year and a cumulative budget gap of £56.8 million over the next four years. The Labour Leader of the City Council has already talked publicly about her desire to expand the boundaries of Nottingham.

However, Nottingham City Council has one of the highest council tax rates in the UK. Their financial mismanagement has resulted in severe service cuts, including library closures and proposed reductions to adult and children’s social care services. This is not the level of service Broxtowe residents deserve.

Why should Broxtowe residents shoulder the burden of Nottingham City Council’s poor decisions? Mishandling of high-profile projects like the failed Broadmarsh Shopping Centre redevelopment, the collapse of Robin Hood Energy, and the misuse of £51 million of ring-fenced social housing funds has cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of pounds.

We must fight for the protection of the existing county boundary where Nottinghamshire County Council currently provides (unlike under Nottingham City Council): better youth services; lower Council Tax; keeping every library in Nottinghamshire open; investment to protect and enhance our local bus routes; £100 million investment across every part of the County; £50 million building and expanding schools and increasing SEND facilities and £66.5 million investment this financial year in repairing our potholes.

Nottingham City Council have made clear they want to expand, so to protect our vital services, please sign this petition calling on the Government to keep Broxtowe in Nottinghamshire and out of Nottingham City.

Say no to a forced reorganisation. Save Broxtowe from joining Nottingham City today!
