Protect Black Voters: Stop Gov. Landry’s Plan to Undermine Fair Maps in Louisiana

The Issue

Right now, Louisiana’s political map includes two majority-Black congressional districts, finally giving Black voters a fairer voice in our elections. But that progress is under threat.

The U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing the current map, and many expect the conservative justices to strike it down. Even before a ruling has been made, Governor Jeff Landry is calling lawmakers into a special session to consider changing the 2026 election calendar and rules.

Why?

To give the Republican-controlled legislature more time to draw a new map, one that could take away a Black district and weaken Black voter power across the state.

This is not about good governance. It’s about changing the rules before the game is played.

We cannot let that happen.

Delaying elections or shifting deadlines to benefit one party is voter manipulation, plain and simple. Louisiana lawmakers should reject any plan that paves the way for less representation and more racial gerrymandering.

The current map was the result of years of legal battles led by civil rights groups. Black residents make up nearly a third of the population, and they deserve more than one seat in Congress.

We are calling on Louisiana legislators and Secretary of State Nancy Landry to oppose any changes to election law that would undermine fair representation. No delay. No manipulation. No rollback of hard-won voting rights.

We demand fair maps, fair elections, and a fair voice for all voters.
