Designate the Piedras Blancas Outstanding Natural Area as part of the California Coastal National Monument.
The Issue
Help Piedras Blancas Light Station Association and Friends of the Elephant Seal secure the highest possible level of state and federal protection for the national treasures in the 476 acres surrounding Piedras Blancas Lighthouse.
- The historic light station has kept mariners away from the famous white rocks since 1875, but the cultural history of Point Piedras Blancas is much older than 140 years. Archeological explorations have revealed that Native Americans were on this point more than 3,000 years earlier.
- Natural treasures include 23,000 northern elephant seals in the only elephant seal rookery in the world that is easily accessible and open to the public every day of the year. The six miles of rookery beaches are surrounded by sweeping coastal vistas, estuaries, riparian wetlands, dune fields, hundreds of species of birds, and a rich variety of marine mammals including harbor seals, California sea lions, southern sea otters, several species of dolphins, California gray whales and humpback whales.
Designation as part of the California Coastal National Monument will unify the response of federal, state and volunteer organizations to current management challenges that risk serious damage to the cultural and natural treasures in the Piedras Blancas Outstanding Natural Area. These challenges include:
- Adequate staff to protect our treasures during current levels of public use.
- Adequate funds to maintain existing infrastructure.
- Expectation of steadily increasing numbers of visitors for each of the next several years.
National Monuments are recognized nationally and internationally as the location of America’s most important natural and cultural treasures and are afforded the highest level of state and federal protection.
-
The newly attained prestige enhances funding opportunities.
-
Additional revenue promotes educational and recreational opportunities for the public—new trails, vista points, signage and educational outreach.
-
Additional revenue expedites restoration and replication of historic buildings and promotes site-specific research.
-
Current annual attendance levels of 750,000 will increase significantly.
-
Ecotourism will become a larger part of the economic base of California’s Central Coast.
Please sign this petition and share it with your friends. Your help in protecting this priceless national treasure is very much appreciated.
