Protect America’s Wild Horses From Slaughter and Roundups

The Issue

Every year, thousands of wild horses and burros—icons of the American West—are chased down by helicopters, ripped from their families, and held in overcrowded holding pens. Many end up sold to kill buyers, destined for slaughter across the border.

This cruelty is not only heartbreaking—it’s unnecessary. These animals are supposed to be protected by federal law, yet the system designed to care for them has been hijacked by roundups, profit, and political pressure from powerful ranching interests.

Now, there's hope. A new bill in Congress—the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Protection Act—has been reintroduced to finally put an end to this cycle of cruelty. It would stop mass roundups, ban slaughter pipeline loopholes, and invest in humane, on-the-range management strategies.

A significant ruling was issued this week by the US Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit: The courts told the Bureau of Land Management that they're violating federal law by failing to consider a core requirement of the law. Wild horses and burros must be managed as a part of maintaining ecological balance on public lands.

But the fight isn't over yet. Lawmakers need to know that Americans still believe wild horses deserve freedom — not cages, not slaughter. Delaying the roundup by a few weeks because of one court ruling isn't enough. These protections need to be permanent.

Please sign and help us send a clear message: wild horses belong on the land, not in holding pens or foreign slaughterhouses. Their lives depend on it.
