The Issue

We call on Governor Newsom, the California State Legislature, and responsible utilities to act immediately to prevent a second, avoidable disaster in Altadena.

In January 2025, the Eaton Fire—sparked by Southern California Edison transmission lines—burned over 14,000 acres, destroyed more than 9,400 homes, and took 19 lives. Thousands of families were displaced overnight.

Today, recovery has stalled—not because families stopped fighting, but because cash flow has run out.

According to Department of Angels research:

As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Eaton Fire on January 7th, 2026, new information has been released that portends a massive impending housing crisis, and we are partnering with My Tribe Rise and the Altadena Fire Survivors Network to stop this second disaster:

61% of Altadena families will lose housing coverage within the first two months of 2026, and rebuilding timelines stretch years beyond the end of insurance housing assistance.

This mismatch has created a devastating cash‑flow gap that families cannot bridge.

Survivors are draining retirement savings, maxing out credit cards, and taking on crushing debt simply to keep a roof overhead—while still being billed for mortgages on homes that no longer exist.

California’s AB 238 provides limited mortgage forbearance, but it is temporary, opt‑in, and DOES NOT address balloon payments, mounting interest, or the urgent need for interim funds.

With litigation against Southern California Edison unlikely to be resolved until 2027, 61% of families will lose their homes in the first two months of 2026, long before justice arrives.

We urgently demand:

  • An immediate moratorium on mortgage payments, interest accrual, foreclosures, and evictions for Eaton Fire survivors.
  • An immediate advance payment from Southern California Edison of  $200,000 per family to keep families housed and moving forward with their rebuild while legal and insurance claims are resolved.
*This is not an additional payment, but will offset their eventual settlement. We need the funds SOONER than the court settlements, which are estimated to commence in 2027.
  • Automatic protections for all impacted households—no opt‑in barriers

Without swift action, families who survived the fire will be forced out of Altadena by financial collapse. This IS  preventable.

Protect Altadena families. Stop the Second Disaster.
