Judy May Chu is an American politician and academic serving as the U.S. Representative for California's 28th congressional district. A dedicated member of the Democratic Party, she has been in Congress since 2009, initially representing California's 32nd district until redistricting. Chu holds the distinction of being the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress. Her extensive political career includes serving as a member of the California State Assembly from 2001 to 2006 and as a City Council member and Mayor of Monterey Park, California, from 1988 to 2001. She also served on the California State Board of Equalization. Academically, Chu earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from UCLA and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University. Before her congressional tenure, she was a psychology instructor at the Los Angeles Community College District.
