The Issue

Living in Shawlands gives you the opportunity to experience a vibrant community spirit and bustling local life.  Unfortunately, the proposed new parking control measures threaten to disrupt this harmony. These plans would negatively impact residents, visitors, key workers, such as carers, district nurses, and GPs, and importantly, our local businesses.

Shawlands is a diverse and thriving part of Glasgow, cherished not just for its local charm but also for its accessibility. The implementation of stringent parking controls would place unnecessary pressure on residents who rely on street parking. Moreover, essential workers, who play a critical role in supporting our community, may find it harder to access those in need, potentially impacting their life-saving services.

Local businesses, which are the heart of Shawlands, would undoubtedly suffer. Many businesses depend on the ease of access for customers who drive from surrounding areas to shop, dine, use the gym or enjoy our local amenities. Limiting parking will deter those visitors, hindering economic activity and threatening the livelihoods of many who reside and work within the community.

It is crucial that the Glasgow City Council reconsiders these plans, taking into account the feedback and concerns of the people who live and work here. The aim should be to enhance the area without sacrificing its accessibility and appeal.

I urge the local authorities to engage in more comprehensive community consultations, exploring alternative solutions like adjustable parking timing or resident parking permits without rigid restrictions. Together, we can find a balanced approach that maintains Shawlands’ vibrancy without compromising essential services and economic vitality.

Please sign this petition to show your support for a more thoughtful and inclusive approach to parking in Shawlands. Our community's future depends on it.
