The Issue

As someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, I intimately understand the challenges and discrimination we face daily. Despite the gradual global progress toward inclusivity, our city still lags in providing equal rights and recognition to LGBTQ+ individuals. This lack of equality is not merely a personal issue; it affects many of us deeply and has tangible consequences for our well-being and quality of life.

In Calapan City, LGBTQ+ people often encounter prejudice in their workplaces, schools, and even within their own families. Many are subjected to unjust treatment and judgment which is fueled by longstanding societal biases. This environment not only affects the mental health of individuals but also stifles diversity and inclusivity, which are crucial for a thriving community.

According to a study by the Social Weather Stations, 61% of Filipinos said they had witnessed some form of discrimination against LGBTQ+ people. This staggering statistic underpins the urgent necessity for change in our community.

To address this issue, we urge the local government of Calapan City to:
1. Implement anti-discrimination ordinances that specifically include protections for the LGBTQ+ community, ensuring fair treatment in employment, healthcare, education, and housing.
2. Facilitate educational programs that promote understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals among the citizens of Calapan, starting in schools and community centers.
3. Establish support networks for LGBTQ+ individuals, providing safe spaces where they can freely express their identities and access mental health support without fear of discrimination.

Our goal is to foster a community where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can live openly, without fear of judgment or persecution. Embracing diversity will not only strengthen our social fabric but will also set an important precedent for other regions in the Philippines.

I invite you to stand with us in this fight for equality by signing this petition. Together, we can make Calapan City a place of inclusion and mutual respect for all.
