Promote Car-Free Congress for First Sundays of every Month

The Issue

As a lifelong Tucson resident, I've come to appreciate the vibrant energy of our downtown, particularly on weekends. However, I've also noticed the growing influx of traffic, especially along Congress Street, where the lively sounds of engines and music can sometimes disrupt the serene experience of pedestrians. While it's wonderful to see our community thriving, the increased traffic raises concerns about pedestrian safety. Even when the bridge from 4th to Congress is closed to traffic from 4th Avenue, the steady flow from Broadway continues to contribute to the congestion. I'm proposing the first Sunday of every month to be Car-Free on Congress!

Many cities adopted similar strategies during and after COVID, reclaiming space for people and seeing their downtown areas thrive. Tucson could experience the same positive impact on our well-being, safety, and local economy.

A study in Bogotá showed a 70% reduction in air pollutants during car-free days, and in Brussels, pedestrian traffic increased by 35%, boosting local businesses. By designating Congress one day of the month for a car-free environment, Tucson could reap similar benefits. This simple change would create a safer, more enjoyable environment for residents and visitors, while also supporting our local economy. Vendors and musicians could use repurposed parking spaces, further enhancing the community atmosphere.

Traffic can easily be redirected around downtown, and parking garages will remain accessible. The Sun Link will likely operate more efficiently without cars in its path, and bus routes will continue as usual. The focus should be on clearing Congress Street itself, while still keeping it accessible.
