The Issue

I am writing this petition to address a personal concern that affects many students and residents in Indiana, particularly on the campus of Purdue University. It has not been uncommon to encounter bats within dormitories here, a situation that often leads to distressing outcomes for these misunderstood creatures. Instead of perceiving bats as a nuisance, it’s high time for Indiana to turn the tide and promote bat positivity.

Bats are an essential component of our ecosystem, serving as natural pest control agents and pollinators. According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, there are 13 species of bats native to the state, and many of these are considered threatened or endangered. Exterminating bats is not only cruel but also counterproductive to our ecological health.

There are effective and humane solutions to managing bat populations and ensuring they can coexist safely with humans. One such solution is the installation of bat houses in strategic locations around campuses and residential areas. This would give bats a safe haven, and help keep them out of buildings, thus reducing encounters.

We urge the state of Indiana to work alongside Purdue University and other educational institutions to spearhead bat conservation initiatives. By offering educational workshops, installing bat houses, and actively engaging with students and residents, we can change public perception and pave the way to a more harmonious coexistence between humans and bats.

Our bats deserve better, and so do we. Let us lead by example and showcase Indiana as a state that truly values ecological diversity and wildlife conservation. Please join us in advocating for a bat-friendly Indiana by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference.
