Prohibit School Staff From Denying Female Students Bathroom Access

The Issue

Let me start with a personal story. My bathroom privileges have been taken away before. As a woman, I experienced firsthand the discomfort and distress that this can cause. Women and girls, especially those going through menstrual cycles, need frequent access to restrooms to manage their periods, to avoid the risk of bleeding through their clothes, leaving tampons in for too long, or wearing a full pad. This is not a luxury or privilege, it is a basic health and hygiene requirement.

The issue goes beyond my experience. Existing school policies allowing staff to deny bathroom access infringe on the rights and well-being of female students. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, teenagers should be allowed to attend to their biological needs and not be forced to 'hold it in', as this can lead to physical health issues such as urinary tract infections and constipation.

Policies should be informed by understanding and empathy, not control and punishment. It is essential that we call for a change in these practices for the betterment of our schools and the wellbeing of female students nationwide. Support this call for change in our schools - sign this petition to prohibit school staff from denying female students their bathroom needs.
