Prohibit Banks and Merchants from Imposing Surcharges on Electronic Transactions

The issue

As a diligent consumer, I am personally frustrated by the unnecessary hidden costs when purchasing items. Often these are in the form of surcharges on electronic transactions. It's a practice that many banks and merchants have taken upon themselves, a burden that directly impacts not only me, but millions of consumers like me. Electronic transactions are touted as convenient ways to purchase goods and services. Yet, these extra fees remind us inconsistently of an unfair price to pay.

According to a report by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) data found Aussies were losing nearly $1 billion a year to surcharges for paying with cards instead of using cash.  This in itself calls for a serious reconsideration of our current financial transaction policies.

We demand that our government start serving its constituents by making it illegal for banks and merchants to charge these surcharges. Such a ban would not only save consumers substantial sums of money, but it would also instill a sense of transparency and fairness within our financial systems.

There are countries such as those in the European Union where it is already illegal for this unfair practice to occur and its time Australia also took this approach

Take a stand against these unfair costs. Your voice matters - signatures on this petition can push our representatives into action. Help us say no to excessive electronic transaction fees. Sign this petition today.
