Prioritize Preeclampsia Education and Standardize Diagnosis Protocols in Maternity Care

Prioritize Preeclampsia Education and Standardize Diagnosis Protocols in Maternity Care
The issue
My personal journey with preeclampsia is a tale of neglect, dismissiveness, and a narrow escape from a potentially fatal situation. It is deeply personal and traumatic, resulting from a lack of sufficient knowledge and awareness about preeclampsia among maternity care providers. As a pregnant woman struggling with increasing symptoms and concerns, I was repeatedly dismissed, left to feel isolated, alone, and unheard. It was only through the intervention of one compassionate doctor, who took the time to listen to my fears and investigate my symptoms, that I received my diagnosis: severe preeclampsia coupled with acute liver failure. It was a near miss for both me and my unborn child.
Preeclampsia affects 5-8% of all pregnancies worldwide, indicating a significant need for streamlined diagnosis and treatment protocols, despite this, there's a glaring disconnect in the realm of maternity care when it comes to recognizing and treating this condition. This is evident from the maternal and neonatal complications that can arise when the condition is not properly addressed, with mortality rates being considerable globally, therefore, this petition for change is a personal mission. It is calling on all hospitals and healthcare providers to prioritize preeclampsia education and training for their medical staff. It is urging health organizations globally to update their preeclampsia examination procedures, laying emphasis on standardized and uniform diagnosis and treatment protocols. This is the only way to ensure that every woman, every mother to-be, will feel heard, understood, and cared for during her pregnancy, without the fear of her concerns being disregarded. Together, we can reduce the risks associated with preeclampsia and ensure safer pregnancies for women everywhere.
