Prioritize Flood Protection for South Tampa Neighborhoods

The Issue

Last year, hundreds of homes in Parkland Estates and surrounding neighborhoods were devastated by flooding during Hurricane Milton. Streets turned into rivers within minutes, and residents were left to deal with the costly and dangerous aftermath. Now, with another hurricane season already upon us, Tampa City Council is delaying critical infrastructure upgrades designed to prevent this from happening again.

The South Howard Flood Relief Project was approved last year to address chronic flooding in low-lying parts of South Tampa. It includes replacing outdated drainage systems with larger culverts and pipes along key streets like W. Swann and S. Howard Avenues. These upgrades aren’t just about convenience—they’re about public safety, protecting property, and preparing for a future of stronger storms.

And yet, City Council just postponed a vote on early funding for the project, citing concerns over cost and disruption. While those are valid discussions, we can’t keep pushing lifesaving infrastructure to the back burner.

We urge the Tampa City Council to stop delaying and fully fund the South Howard Flood Relief Project now. The residents of South Tampa should not have to choose between preserving small businesses and preventing flood damage—we can support both, but not by stalling.

Delays mean risk. Delays mean more flooded homes. Delays mean more trauma for families already living in fear of the next storm.

Please add your name if you believe Tampa must take decisive action now to protect our neighborhoods from repeat flooding. The time to prepare is not after the next storm—it’s today.
