The Issue

North Macedonia is currently grappling with numerous economic and political challenges that need immediate attention and resolution. Our country's resources are already stretched thin, and adding more pressure to them could destabilize the strides we have made over the years. This petition seeks to urge the Macedonian government to reconsider or completely refrain from any plans to accommodate refugees from the United Kingdom.

As citizens of North Macedonia, we understand the importance of providing aid to those in need. However, we must also think of our local communities, economies, and infrastructures. Our nation has one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe, with statistics in the first quarter of 2023 showing it hovering around 17.8%. The economy is still on the path to recovery after being severely impacted by the global pandemic, and any additional economic burden might lead to unforeseen consequences that would set back the progress made in recent years.

Moreover, our political landscape is not yet stable. In 2022, North Macedonia saw significant political unrest, and adding more issues has the potential to exacerbate tensions. Our priority should be to focus internally to heal our political divisions and strengthen our nation's governance before taking on additional international responsibilities. While compassion is vital and global solidarity crucial, it's equally important to ensure that our country's welfare and progress are not compromised.

We urge the Macedonian government to seek alternatives that would allow us to offer support in ways that don’t jeopardize our fragile economy and political stability. This could include providing humanitarian aid through other means or supporting global efforts without directly accommodating refugees on our soil.

Please sign this petition to let our government know that the well-being of North Macedonia should take precedence to ensure a stable and prosperous future for all its citizens. Together, we can make a difference.
