Prevent the Removal of the London Plane Tree at 45 Union Street

The issue

I am a resident of McMahons Point NSW, Australia, deeply affected by the rapid loss of our local tree canopy. In just six months, we've witnessed the removal of three beautiful trees in our street. Now, we are on the brink of losing another - a majestic London Plane tree located outside 45 Union Street. This tree is scheduled to be cut down on April 29th due to its declining health.

This isn't just about one tree; it's about preserving our community's natural beauty and biodiversity. The London Plane is known for its ability to adapt to urban environments and improve air quality by absorbing pollutants (source: Arboricultural Association). Losing four trees in such a short time significantly impacts not only our streetscape but also contributes negatively to climate change.

We urge North Sydney Council to reconsider this decision and explore all possible alternatives before resorting to removal. We understand that sometimes trees need to be removed for safety reasons, but we believe that every effort should be made first for preservation or rehabilitation. Pruning the tree’s branches over winter should be the first step.
