My name is Michelle Francis, and I've poured my heart, soul and savings into my bakery on Lyndhurst High Street where I've been proudly serving our community for the past 2 years and 6 months. In fact, when I took ownership, it was from a bakery that had been there over 30years.  Baking has always been more than a business to me; it's a passion that allows me to bring smiles to my customers’ faces every day. Over time, we have become a cherished community spot where neighbors can come together, enjoy fresh pastries, and support a local business.

However, this harmony is now under threat. The site next door but one, which previously housed a Mettricks café that did not succeed, is planning to reopen as a bakery. The introduction of another bakery so close threatens not just my business, but also the unique, personalized service and product choice my customers have come to love.

While competition is a natural part of business, (there is a very small shop on the other side of the road at the bottom of the High Street, that  sell products not baked on the premises) having two bakeries almost side by side is unsustainable in our small area, threatening both businesses’ viability. This isn’t merely about defending my livelihood. It's about preserving the character, community spirit and diversity of our cherished neighborhood retail mix. 

I am urging our local council and planning authorities to reconsider any permits or support that would allow this bakery to open in such close proximity to an existing one. Instead, let's work toward a balanced marketplace that supports both small business owners and the broader community with diverse options.

This decision is crucial not only for my small business but for ensuring our area remains a vibrant, unique, and supportive community for every resident and visitor.
