Prevent the Ban on Xl Bullies in Ireland by Mandating Responsible Ownership Training
The Issue
I have a deep-rooted belief that it's wrong to stereotype or ban a breed based on how some owners choose to raise their dogs. Traumatic stories of Xl bullies should be attached to irresponsible ownership, not to the breed itself. The issue should not be about banning a breed, but rather addressing the issue at its source - educating and enforcing responsible dog ownership. I understand that concerns arise from incidences of dog bites, but all dogs have the potential to bite. The focus, therefore, needs to shift from the breed to the behaviour of the owners.
A study conducted by Dogs Trust Ireland reflects that breed-specific legislation does not make communities safer. Banning a breed only drives the issue underground, thus exacerbating the problem instead of solving it (Dogs Trust Ireland, 2019). Moreover, it only serves to risk the extinction of breeds like Xl bullies.
An effective solution would involve mandating education programs to promote responsible ownership. Countries like Finland and Denmark have implemented such initiatives successfully, resulting in a drastic reduction of dog bite incidences (Study of Canine Legislation, 2020). It is high time Ireland follows suit.
Let's share the responsibility of ensuring the safety of both our community and the survival of breeds like Xl bullies; actions speak louder than ban laws. It is time to educate, not eliminate. Please sign this petition to call for the replacement of the ban legislation with a more comprehensive dog ownership education program.
