The Issue
I live in Fayetteville, Arkansas, a city I love for its vibrant community and inclusive spirit. However, recent events have shaken my confidence in our state's leadership. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has decided to deny state funding to our city simply because we've been labeled a "sanctuary city." This is not only unjust but threatens the very fabric of what makes Fayetteville a welcoming and supportive environment for all its residents.
Our community has chosen not to engage in aggressive measures that involve deporting undocumented individuals. Instead, we believe in opening pathways to legality, helping individuals become contributing members of our society and economy. Denying funding to our city for maintaining its values does nothing but punish hundreds of thousands of residents who depend on state-provided services.
Fayetteville is at risk of losing essential funding that supports our schools, healthcare services, and infrastructure projects. This funding is crucial for the well-being and development of our city. It is unfair to put the livelihoods and growth of Fayetteville's residents in jeopardy because of ideological disagreements.
The denial of funds does not merely affect those who are undocumented; it extends to every single resident, taxpayer, and family in Fayetteville. State funding supports public schools, roads, emergency services, and many other programs that all citizens rely on every day. By withholding these funds, our city faces significant challenges that have real, tangible impacts on our lives.
We urge Governor Sanders and the Arkansas state government to reconsider this punitive measure. Let's focus on collaboration and creating solutions that work for all Arkansans, regardless of their immigration status. It's time to support measures that encourage integration and contribute positively to our state's economy and community life.
I am calling on you to join me in demanding change. Sign this petition to urge the Arkansas government to stop withholding state funds from Fayetteville and to support a fair and inclusive approach to addressing immigration concerns. Together, we can protect the future of our city and its residents. Please sign and share this petition to make your voice heard.
