Prevent Rezoning and Protect the Historic Haines House - Don't Donate Money Online
The Issue
The Haines House isn’t just a piece of history; it’s part of our story, where we grew up or chose to live.
We’re asking you to join us in opposing the proposed rezoning of the Haines House to commercial property. There are plenty of opportunities for commercial growth in other areas of Olde Town, and changing the zoning in our quiet neighborhood would disrupt our way of life.
As a historic landmark, the Haines House is a treasure for us now and for future generations who will continue our community's story. Let’s not take away their connection to our heritage.
The house is the most historically significant home in Altoona. Thomas E. Haines, an early Altoona resident, and businessman built it. The original wrought iron fence still encloses the property today. Haines may be best known for donating the land to the city of Altoona to be used as a park, which now bears his name. He also served as the second Mayor of Altoona and operated a tile & brick factory and grain elevator.
Haines was not the only prominent occupant of the home. Dr. William Carpenter and his wife Lenora lived there and used part of the first floor as Dr. Carpenter’s office. A side entrance for patients to enter the office still remains. In addition to serving as the town physician/surgeon, Dr. Carpenter also served as Polk County Coroner (1917-1918, 1929-1936), and briefly served as Mayor of Altoona in 1934.
Other owners of the home have helped to preserve its history. The Woodward family owned the home for most of the last 50 years. The home is one of the most historically significant in Altoona and the most historically intact.
We hope you’ll support us in keeping the Haines House residential. By prioritizing our history, community, and identity, we can protect what makes Olde Town so special. Please sign this petition and help us ensure our neighborhood remains a place we can cherish today, tomorrow, and for years to come.
