The Issue

Living in the serene and pristine environment of the Adirondack Park, our small community in the Town of Greig, NY is facing a serious threat. The proposed installation of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) could potentially become an environmental nightmare, disrupting not just our daily lives but also the delicate ecosystem we hold dear.

The Adirondack Park is a unique natural treasure, known for its beautiful landscapes and rich biodiversity. Allowing a BESS system here could lead to ecological imbalances. These systems, while beneficial in managing energy, have significant risks in terms of safety and environmental impact. The presence of lithium-ion batteries introduces potential fire hazards as well as leakage risks, which could irreversibly contaminate our water sources and soil.

Moreover, such an infrastructural development may increase vehicular traffic, noise pollution, and alter the aesthetic value of our community, challenging its peaceful and rural character. As residents, we are concerned about the lack of comprehensive environmental review and community consultation on this project. Our input and the well-being of our community must be considered prior to any approvals.

We are not against renewable energy advances; however, we urge the decision-makers to carefully evaluate alternative locations for this BESS system that would not compromise our cherished environment. We demand transparency in decision-making processes and a genuine commitment to preserving our local natural beauty and safety.

Help us protect the Adirondack Park and our way of life. Sign this petition to prevent the installation of the BESS system in the Town of Greig, NY, and ensure the voices of our community are heard.

Responded
I am reluctant to respond more than I did at the last Town Board meeting where this subject was discussed as I do not wish anyone to misconstrue that my words are the consensus of the Board as a whole. However, I believe the following statements reflect what the Board stated in the meeting: 1. We are aware of the community’s concerns and share most, if not all, of them. 2. No special permit application has been received, and none is expected for at least 4 months, so the Town has taken no action specific to this project. 3. Since we became aware of the proposed project the Town Board has been working with the town attorney and County Planning Department to establish zoning regulations that would regulate solar, wind and energy storage projects and hopefully survive judicial challenge. 4. We will continue to monitor this situation as it develops and post updates to the town website (https://townofgreig.gov/) – any person who wants more information including any paperwork that the Town has received from the developer can also contact the Clerk (https://townofgreig.gov/departments/detail/1). 5. The public can also access information directly from the potential developer and ask questions and leave comments at: https://eipstorage.com/foundersridge/. Bob Johnson Greig Town Supervisor
