The issue

Hi Mt Hawthorn,

My name is Adele, and I live in Mt Hawthorn, close to the Woodstock Street/Edinboro Street intersection.

I am tired of seeing serious crashes at this intersection. Every time I hear tyres screech or a loud impact, I worry that this will be the day someone is killed.

Cars have ended up on the footpath where children, parents with prams, cyclists and residents stand every day waiting to cross. It is only a matter of chance that no one has been seriously injured or killed.

Many local children—including my own son and the children of friends and neighbours—walk through this intersection on their way to and from school. On numerous occasions they have passed through only moments before or after a crash.

Edinboro Street is increasingly being used as a rat run by commuters. Many drivers are unfamiliar with the area and fail to notice the stop sign before entering the intersection, resulting in frequent T-bone collisions with vehicles travelling along Woodstock Street.

Part of the problem appears to be the road layout. Drivers travelling south along Edinboro encounter a give-way intersection followed by a roundabout before reaching Woodstock Street. The stop sign at Woodstock is also difficult to see until the last few metres because of parked cars and verge trees. While these factors don’t excuse drivers from stopping, they may contribute to the high number of crashes.

Local residents have raised concerns for years. Unfortunately, the crashes continue, making it clear that the current layout is not working.

We are simply asking the City of Vincent to carry out a comprehensive engineering assessment of the intersection, determine the most effective safety improvements, and implement them.

We are not insisting on one particular solution. Whether that is a roundabout, traffic calming, improved signage, raised platforms, road narrowing, better line marking or another engineering treatment should be determined by the City’s traffic engineers. We simply want a solution that improves safety.

This is about protecting everyone who uses this intersection every day—residents, pedestrians, cyclists, families, school children, and even the drivers who unknowingly become involved in these collisions. Nobody sets out intending to cause a serious crash.

By signing this petition, you are supporting practical improvements to the Woodstock Street/Edinboro Street intersection to help prevent further crashes and reduce the risk of serious injury or loss of life.
