The Issue

The students of TCA Central deserve the opportunity to play and learn in a safe and nurturing environment at TCA Central. The proposed construction of a massive five-story, 57-foot tall apartment complex by Blackburn Communities LLC threatens this safe haven. We must unite as a community to prevent the potential chaos and disruptions this project will bring to Colorado Springs, CO.

Building such a vast structure adjacent to a quiet school environment not only poses risks of increased traffic and noise but also raises concerns about the safety of our children. Imagine young students having to navigate through an influx of vehicles during their daily routines, or the constant noise disrupting classroom learning. This is not the environment we envisioned for our children.

Colorado Springs is a community that values the well-being of its youth and the integrity of its educational institutions. Allowing this apartment complex to be constructed next to TCA Central fundamentally alters that vision. Moreover, studies have shown that increased traffic and urban noise can significantly impact children's academic performance and their mental health.

There is an urgent need to reassess this plan and look for alternative locations where such a complex can coexist without compromising the security and serenity of a school zone. Blackburn Communities LLC should prioritize community concerns over financial gain, and Colorado Springs authorities must stand with their citizens in preserving our city's quality of life.

Please join us in urging city officials and developers to halt the construction plans for this apartment complex. By adding your signature, you are advocating for the safety and future of our children and demonstrating a commitment to maintaining the essence of Colorado Springs.

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your concerns. I have reviewed the Planning Commission materials and do not see this item on their current agenda. My best estimate is that it may be three to four more months before it is scheduled for their review. I also noticed the petition lists Brian Risley, Mayor Mobolade, and myself as decision makers. That information is incorrect. Once the Planning Commission votes, if the item moves forward to City Council, the decision will rest with the full nine-member City Council. A majority vote of at least five councilmembers would be required for the project to proceed. I encourage you to update the petition to reflect this process, so the community has accurate information. Thank you again for your engagement and for caring about the future of our city. Best regards, Lynette Crow-Iverson Council President City Councilmember At Large A Note from the Civic Engagement Team: Change.org provides a tool that allows petition starters and supporters to email decision makers directly from our platform. The above response was sent in reply to an email in support of the petition. We also wanted to note that the petition starter updated the petition to reflect the entire city council.
