The Issue

As a native of Accra, I've watched as the city I love transforms relentlessly, morphing from a place of natural beauty into an ever-expanding concrete jungle. While city development is a sign of progress and prosperity, the rapid urbanisation of Accra is threatening our mental health and contributing to global climate change. Moreover, pollution from cars and the inadequacies of our infrastructure are a constant, choking reminder of a future that does not care for its surroundings.

Almost 60% of the Ghanaian population now resides in urban areas (World Bank), and yet, the green open spaces necessary for the health of our city and its residents are dwindling at an alarming rate. Concrete cannot replace the vital role of these green open spaces in promoting good mental health, biodiversity, and reducing greenhouse gases. Urban cities, especially those developing rapidly like Accra, must make room for nature alongside advancement; the two are not mutually exclusive.

We urge the municipal authority to idenfity, safeguard, and expand existing green areas in our city. Let Accra become a model for other rapidly urbanizing cities, a testament that growth and development can happen without sacrificing the environment and mental well-being of the population. Your signatures can help protect the soul of our city, ensuring a healthier, greener future for all. Please sign and share this petition to make a difference.
