The Issue

As a social housing tenant myself, I've witnessed first-hand the inequity faced by tenants across the UK for most of my life. Many individuals have spent decades paying rent without gaining a single penny of equity in their homes. This is not only disheartening for the poorest strata of our society, but is also a missed opportunity for national economic improvement and community growth.

The 'Right To Sell' (RTS) 2.0 proposal has been offered to HMG as a unique opportunity to demonstrate how they can move 4.5 million social homes from the 'liability' column of their accounts and turn them back into the Bricks and Mortar 'asset' that they actually are.

I am calling upon the UK Parliament to urge the current Labour administration to implement the £2.5 Trillion economic rejuvenation RTS 2.0 proposal: this could and should be done prior to the impending negativity of the current economist's predictions of November's Autumn Statement by Rachel Reeves MP.

This plan has sat idly in the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) for more than a year, despite being crucial for social housing reform. I have been assured that the Chancellor is aware of this proposal. However, she continues to plan tax hikes without acting upon a solution that could significantly benefit so many British citizens.

In July, I was informed by my MP, Laura Kyrke-Smith, that her superior, the Housing Minister, displayed a "serious interest" in this plan. The proposal falls within his remit, as it revolves around reallocating social housing equity, thereby allowing tenants to own a part of their home. Yet, it continues to be disregarded by both the Treasury and Housing departments.

The proposal is not just a financial maneuver; it is a chance to empower social housing tenants, fostering inclusion and stability within communities. Tenants deserve the opportunity to benefit from their investment in their homes and futures. This economic rejuvenation not only promises social equity but also strengthens the overall economy by increasing homeowners' participation and reducing financial strain on government resources.

An undeployed plan of such magnitude represents a critical oversight, particularly when it could be used for transforming millions of our poorest people's lives across the UK. The neglect of this plan perpetuates inequality and misses out on a generational opportunity to rebuild our economic framework around fairness and inclusion, whilst enriching our economy without the need for endless borrowing, or more cuts to our most vulnerable's service needs.

It is imperative for the UK Parliament to act now. By speaking up, we can push for this proposal’s consideration and execution. Join me in urging Parliament to hold the Labour administration accountable for the activating of this crucial RTS 2.0 plan in short order.

Let's turn perpetual welfare into wealth creation and an unsustainable housing benefits merry-go-round into a once in a generational transformation of our economy.
