Take "CALORIES COUNT" stickers off, and no longer require them
The Issue
When I was 16 years old I was diagnosed with anorexia, it was hard enough to recover in a society so obsessed with dieting, now there's this.
INFO: "By the end of next year, the Food and Drug Administration will require vending machine operators to post calorie counts on 5 million machines across the country. The new labeling regulation is part of the Obama administration’s Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, and will require vending machine owners to comply within the year."
NOT ONLY DOES IT TRIGGER VICTIMS OF EATING DISORDERS BUT: "new regulation puts unnecessary burden on the people who own the machines... companies will have to cough up an initial investment of $2,400, plus $2,200 in annual costs."
IT DOESNT EVEN WORK: "What we're seeing is that many consumers, particularly vulnerable groups, do not report noticing calorie labeling information and even fewer report using labeling to purchase fewer calories," study researcher Dr. Brian Elbel, an assistant professor of Population Health and Health Policy at the NYU School of Medicine, said in a statement.
Even if it did work, diet pops sugars end up making people hungry and ultimately gain weight. So the only option really suggested is the water.
These stickers are putting inappropriate concerns into children's minds, and reinforcing the notion of death in an eating disorder victim's head.
I understand obesity is a huge concern currently, but this is NOT the way to eliminate it, just like those BMI (COMPLETELY OUTDATED) report cards.
